A mobile site redesign allowing users to feel more confident in finding information and navigating Stonewall Sports (Columbus chapter)'s site.

HIGH LEVEL TIMELINE

2 Week Sprint

MAKE OF THE TEAM

I acted as the sole user experience / interface designer.

KEY GOAL

Create a new cohesive design while still holding the core values of Stonewall Sports.

THE PROBLEM

The current website does not provide an optimal viewing experience across various platforms. Cited by several individuals that on a smaller screen the site becomes hard to view / navigate.

  • Lack of Responsiveness: The current website does not provide an optimal viewing experience across various platforms. Noted by several individuals that on a smaller screen the site becomes hard to view / navigate.

  • Inefficient Content Management: Managing and updating website content on a seasonal basis is time consuming and cumbersome with the current layout.

  • Outdated Design: With the growth and expansion of the City’s league it has become more and more outdated from when it was first built.. Creating a trialsome experience for users.

MY ROLE

As the sole user experience researcher and user interface designer; I was in charge of identifying and aligning the target user's stressors with the industry goals.

Working closely with members on the board, it was imperative to ensure the needs of the athletes and the committee members were being met. As a non-profit the board relies on social media and their website to let their message be heard.

To understand the core purpose and reason for Stonewall Sports Columbus's website to better understand how and why users interact with their site. Allowing for a cleaner and more responsive web design.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

The first goal of this project is to determine the main focus of the organization having this website. Secondly, analyzing the larger issues of the site that leaves the user frustrated.

 THE USER

Our target audience are members of the Columbus community who want to get involved with the organization.

Stonewall sports in totality is a LGBTQ+ and Ally not-for-profit sports league organization. Founded in 2010, they provide nonprofit, inclusive, low-cost, fun local sports leagues that are rooted in philanthropy, giving back to their communities.

Locally Stonewall sports was established in 2017 and has been a flourishing environment with growing leagues from Yoga/Bocceball to Kickball and Volleyball. It was announced in Late 2023 that Columbus will be hosting the National Tourney in 2025.

BREAKING DOWM THE PROCESS

To understand the goals of the organization, I sat down with the board members to understand their needs, while meeting with several athletes within the organization for insight into their current frustrations with the site.

After having conversations with the organization as well as several athletes. The common theme between the two areas was a cleaner look and approach to relaying information from organization to users interacting with the site.

Community

Users want to know what is happening within their community through the organizations site. Whether it is for celebration of the communities achievements or upcoming events.

Design

Users all quoted that the site is "messy" and disorganized structurally. Speaking to the fact they have all just grown accustom to the disorganization.

Responsiveness

Users feel like there is a lack of attention when it comes to updating the site and or ensuring the site is accessible for majority of the users.

UNDERSTANDING THE USER

Based on the conversations with the committee & the users of Stonewall Sports. The user wants to be able to navigate the site from mobile and desktop screens without feeling disoriented. The athletes are also looking for visible communication of celebrations and updates.

Leading to the questions of:

1. How might we redesign / build up the site to allow users to feel at ease when toggling between mobile and desktop.

2.How might we give the user visibility to community celebrations and business updates.

3.How might we increase accessibility of becoming involved with the organization.

THE FLOW

Although with this redesign I am not altering the flow of the website, mapping out the user flow allowed me to better understand how each page should communicate with others. To allow for a seamless user experience.

THE WIREFRAMES

After speaking  the board members on the expectations for this redesign, taking into account the user learnings. It was time to take the user flow and make some improvements to the design. In the hopes the user will be able to easily navigate the site & receive a clearer image of the organization's mission.

Speaking with the Stonewall Sports, I was limited with the design abilities of the site due to the server they use for their website at this time. The non-profit uses WIX as their design platform which has its' limitations on what can and cannot be accomplished.

Usability Testing

After receiving feedback from the organization with slight updates and wording feedback it was time to add typography and imagery; aligning with the organizations communications committee.

The Results

  • All participants rated the design a 9/10 in terms of improvements from current site.

  • All participants said that the site was very easy to navigate.

  • A board member called out possibly tweaking some of the wording.

  • There was a lack of advisement on how to improve the design further.

CURRENT & REDESIGN COMPARISON

To show the difference between the current Stonewall Sports Columbus website on a mobile device vs. my redesign.

Homepage.png
Homepage (1).png

Introduced a new hero design, to allow the user to understand who Stonewall Sports is. With CTA buttons for both types of personas.

Sense of community is important to use user. Creating a gallery to showcase events etc.

The current landing page leaves users struggling to understand where to go navigate to.

The redesign allows the user to not only receive the same information about their social media accounts. As well as allows the user to learn more about the organization at first glance.

Cleaned up the overall design, to allow users to learn more about the organization.

Created a focal point for their Mission Statement.

NEXT STEPS

Coming out of user testing it was time to make minor adjustments to the overall design of the product. Ensuring spacing and flow made sense to the product before presenting the design back to the board for further review.

LESSONS LEARNED

Working with a Non-profit organization on a redesign of their current webpage will take longer than 2 weeks to accomplish.

As I continue to partner with Stonewall Sports Columbus to enhance their user experience. I did find out early on in this process that there are many limitations to how much an organization can alter or change. As the site stands today it is being published through WIX editor. Allowing the organization to up date and change information but with the limitations of WIX.

You will also notice on the Registration page there are boxes built out. This is due to the 3rd Party application the organization uses to gather all registration data that is being imbedded into the site to allow users to maneuver through the sign up process. As I continue this relationship with Stonewall Sports there is opportunity to enhance some of the wording by working with the Communications committee & streamline information through the 3rd party application or to build something inhouse.
